What?
What constitutes a ‘Good Deed’?
It doesn’t take too much imagination to understand what a ‘Good Deed’ is. Everyone is aware that a ‘deed’ is an action that we take. An action that benefits someone other than ourselves.
Put simply, a ‘Good Deed’ is anything you do, any action you take, to either help someone else or to brighten their day, no matter how small or large that deed is.
The main thing is that the person, or people, on the receiving end of your ‘Good Deed’ will appreciate what’s been done for them and, often, it will bring a smile to their face. At least, that’s what we’re hoping for, anyway.
What kind of things are we talking about?
It may be something as simple as helping an old lady to cross the road or helping someone pick up something they’ve dropped. Perhaps someone stops you to ask for directions somewhere and you take the time to point them in the right direction. You might make a donation to a charity or, better still, carry out an avtivity for which other people can sponsor you. Use your own imagination, join our Group ‘1 Good Deed a Day’ on Facebook (by clicking here) and let us know what deeds you’ve done. By doing this you may inspire the creativity in other people and help them to come up with new ways of doing a ‘Good Deed’.
Does it have to be someone you don’t know?
Not at all. Anyone may be the beneficiary of one of your ‘Good Deeds’. A family member, a friend, an acquaintance, a business associate, a work colleague or a complete stranger. You could do a ‘Good Deed’ for an individual, a group of people, a company, a charitable organisation or any kind of organisation, come to that. If it’s a ‘Good Deed’ it counts! No special conditions or criteria – you be the judge.
If you would consider it to be a ‘Good Deed’ if someone did it for you, then it qualifies as a ‘Good Deed’!
My partners’ son and his girlfriend recently came over for a coffee one Sunday afternoon. They only live a 15 minute walk from us. However, whilst they were here the weather changed and the rain started to fall. When the time came for them to leave, I gave them a lift home to save them a 15 minute walk in the rain. Was this a ‘Good Deed’? I think so. If the roles had been reversed, I would have appreciated it, very much indeed. We can’t make it more simple or straight forward than that.
Can I do more than 1 ‘Good Deed’ a day?
Definitely! You’re at liberty to do as many ‘Good Deeds’ as you’d like to do. I’m sure that, once you start, you’ll soon begin to realise just how easy it can be to do a ‘Good Deed’, particularly, when you’ve got the whole philosophy firmly in your mind.
Opportunities for us to do a ‘Good Deed’ are all around us – they always have been and they always will be – but we don’t notice them until we start paying attention and start to look out for those opportunities.
It’s a bit like buying a new car. You never notice them very much until you have one. Then it seems like there are loads about. It’s simply that we’ve now ‘tuned in’ to that particular car. It’s referred to as our Reticular Activating System – or RAS, for short.
