It’s fair to say that the vast majority of succesful people live with an ethos of continuous personal and professional development, that’s what helps them achieve their success in the first place. It’s very interesting to see just how many of them grow to understand how important it is to ‘give something back’. Very often this ‘giving back’ involves contributing, financially, to charitable causes of one kind or another but the realisation usually comes that actually ‘doing something’ gives people far more satisfaction than simply donating money.
You see, the real reason that anyone chooses to do anything in life is because of the way they feel afterwards. Simply put, everything we do (or don’t do), we do for the feelings we get afterwards.
Let’s give you an example
Imagine someone setting a goal to save a certain amount of money. The money, itself, isn’t what motivates them to go out and earn it. What motivates them is the fact that they want to use the money to enable them to do, or to buy, certain things. In this particular case, let’s say that what they want to buy was a new car. Just think about it for a minute. I’m sure you’ve all been out and bought a car, even if it wasn’t a brand new car but just a new car to you.
What feelings does this engender? First of all, it’s the excitement of getting to choose exactly what car it is that you want to buy. Then, as you see your savings growing, you stimulate the anticipation of the fact that the time of actually going out to order the car is getting ever closer. Then comes the feeling of success and elation when you’ve saved the amount you need to go out and buy the car.
Now comes the actual shopping experience. Going out to the showroom and getting to sit in the new car. You finally experience the touch and feel of the fabrics and materials. You get to take the all important test drive and see exactly how the car performs out on the open road. What follows is the huge sense of satisfaction that comes when you sign the order for the car and pay for it and then the ultimate moment comes when you drive the car home for the first time and get to start using it every day.
Ultimately, the money has done one simple thing. It’s enabled you to experience the huge range of feelings that we’ve encountered throughout this whole process.
